At Essfour Psychological Services, we believe that effective therapy begins with the right approach. That's why we offer three evidence-based therapies, each designed to address different challenges. With over 14 years of NHS experience, our clinicians match each client with the therapy most suited to their needs.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is one of the most widely researched and recommended therapies in the UK. It's endorsed by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) for a range of mental health conditions and focuses on the connection between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
In CBT, you'll work collaboratively with your therapist to identify unhelpful thinking patterns and develop practical strategies to change them. Sessions are structured, goal-oriented and typically run for 8 to 20 weeks.
CBT is particularly effective for:
- Anxiety disorders (generalised anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder)
- Depression and low mood
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Phobias
- Insomnia
- Health anxiety
- Low self-esteem
What makes CBT unique is its focus on the present. Rather than exploring the distant past, it equips you with tools you can use immediately and long after therapy ends.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a specialist therapy originally developed for trauma and PTSD, now recommended by the World Health Organization and NICE as a front-line treatment. It works by helping your brain reprocess distressing memories so they no longer trigger the same emotional intensity.
During EMDR sessions, your therapist will guide you through sets of bilateral stimulation, usually eye movements, while you briefly focus on a traumatic memory. This process allows the brain to "unstick" the memory and store it in a way that no longer causes distress.
EMDR is particularly effective for:
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Complex trauma and childhood adversity
- Flashbacks and nightmares
- Accident and assault recovery
- Grief and bereavement
- Performance anxiety
- Phobias with a traumatic origin
Many clients find EMDR remarkable because it doesn't require extensive talking about the traumatic event. The processing happens naturally, and relief can often be felt within just a few sessions.
Behavioural Couples Therapy (BCT)
Relationships are central to our wellbeing, and when they're under strain, every aspect of life can feel harder. BCT is an evidence-based approach designed specifically for couples who want to strengthen their relationship, improve communication or navigate a difficult period together.
BCT focuses on changing patterns of interaction between partners. Rather than assigning blame, it helps both individuals understand how their behaviours affect each other and builds new, healthier ways of relating.
BCT is particularly effective for:
- Communication breakdown
- Frequent arguments and conflict
- Emotional distance or withdrawal
- Rebuilding trust after betrayal
- Navigating major life changes together
- Parenting disagreements
- Relationship dissatisfaction
BCT recognises that both partners contribute to the dynamic in a relationship. Sessions involve both partners and focus on practical exercises that create real change between sessions.
Which Therapy Is Right for You?
Choosing the right therapy can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to decide alone. During your free 15-minute consultation, we'll listen to what you're experiencing and recommend the approach most likely to help.
Sometimes a single therapy is all that's needed. Other times, a combination works best, for example, EMDR to process a past trauma followed by CBT to manage ongoing anxiety. We tailor every treatment plan to the individual.
The most important step is the first one. If you're considering therapy, we'd love to hear from you. Book your free consultation today and let's find the right path forward together.
